Family Mediation: Child Access Training


How do you help families reorganize themselves when spouses face separation or divorce? How do you help parents who have never married work together to meet the needs of their children? Learn key concepts about family dynamics and relevant legal topics so you can assist parents in transition develop a parenting plan using the mediation process. Class format includes small group exercises, discussions, coached role plays, video, and lecture. Successful completion of this 20-hour course satisfies the Child Access Mediation Training requirements under Maryland Judicial Rule 17-106.

What You’ll Learn:

All the topics required by Maryland Circuit Rule 17-106 regarding “child access mediation training” and more:

· Maryland law regarding:
ü Separation, divorce, and annulment
ü Parenting arrangements including child custody and visitation
ü Child and spousal support
ü The interrelationship of parenting arrangements and child support
· Introductory tenets of family systems and child development theory
· Emotional aspects of separation and divorce on adults and children
· How to help parents develop their parenting plan
· Screening for and addressing domestic violence
· Mediation and the Maryland court system
· Ethical questions in the practice of family mediation

Instructor: Barbara Williams, MA, M. Ed., J.D., has a private practice in mediation and is listed on the rosters for court-appointed mediation with several Circuit Courts in Maryland. Barbara has earned mediator certification from the Maryland Council on Dispute Resolution. Barbara is a long time member of the Board of Directors of this organization and serves on its Certification Committee. Barbara subscribes to the Maryland Program on Mediator Excellence and serves on its Training Task Force.

Pre-requisite: 40-hr Basic Mediation Training or permission of the instructor. Register by Feb 14th and receive a $60 Early Bird discount.

Cost: $500, includes a $100 materials fee.

Winter Program in Multi-Track Diplomacy and Conflict Transformation
